The AI doomsday fears have come to markets, and some of the biggest names in investing have been stirred by recent warnings of a robot apocalypse.
Paul Tudor Jones, the billionaire founder of Tudor Investment Corporation hedge fund, recently sounded the alarm on the rise of AI, highlighting major issues he sees developing as the technology develops at an alarming rate, potentially out of human control.
“A solution to the fusion problem to unleash clean cheap energy and save our planet could happen within five years, another major technologist has said,” Jones wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal. “But the rest of it feels ominous, like waiting for a Category 6 hurricane.”
His post comes as AI fears have been fanned by recent high-profile warnings. Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, resigned this week, posting on X that both Anthropic and OpenAI are “gambling with our lives” as they race to develop more powerful AI capabilities.
Jakub Pachocki, chief scientist at OpenAI recently wrote on the company’s blog that he feared that no one is prepared for what further AI advancements will mean for humanity, adding that he believed intervention is necessary.
Tudor Jones highlighted both statements as part of his own argument, noting that AI is pacing to becoming a geopolitical force and a third superpower on par with the US and China.
“The threat is real and demands coordinated action by the U.S. and China,” he said. “Both countries must commit to a timeline to control the advance and proliferation of AI in a safe, contained and interpretable way.”
The dire warning is a departure from his views on what AI could mean for markets. In May, he predicted two years of growth ahead for the AI market, making it clear he sees strong upside for investors.
Now, however, he’s urging world leaders, specifically President Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping to work together to ensure it is regulated properly and doesn’t spiral out of human control. Tudor Jones cited rogue OpenAI agents’ recent attacks on AI startup Hugging Face as a clear example of AI posing a significant danger as it continues to gain autonomous functionality.
“A new superpower is about to enter the fray, one that is unknowable and unending and potentially dwarfs the U.S. and China individually or collectively,” Tudor Jones added. “I hope Messrs. Trump and Xi are aware of this when they meet. They need to make AI safety the top priority for the rest of their tenures.”
