Mark Zuckerberg casts doubt on AI ‘doom’ rhetoric, says firms don’t need to collaborate on safety

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday that companies developing advanced artificial intelligence models do not need to work together to prevent the catastrophic outcomes that many industry leaders have warned about.

In an interview with former Wall Street Journal columnist Joanna Stern, Zuckerberg also cast doubt on the mores alarmist members of the AI sector, some of whom have said human extinction is possibility if AI improves without guardrails in place.

“I think that there’s a lot of rhetoric that is filled with doom, and my view on this is that there are a number of labs that are working on building advanced AI, and I don’t think that we need some kind of industry-wide coordination to not necessarily mess this up,” he said on Stern’s show “New Things.”

“I think that just each lab needs to take the time, and when it sees that there are issues, you just take the time that you need internally to make sure that you’re proceeding safely,” Zuckerberg added.

Meta launched its personal AI assistant, Muse, on Sept. 8 in the United States. It’s available on major app stores and has been integrated into Meta’s Ray Ban audio glasses.
